Car to be at auction 1/16
www.rmsothebys.com/az16/arizona/lots/1994-jaguar-xj220/1078701

Auction description:
1994 Jaguar XJ220
Chassis no. SAJJEAEX8AX220619

Finished in Spa Silver over grey upholstery, this XJ220 was completed in 1994 as a left-hand-drive example and holds the distinction of being one of only two known examples that is EPA/DOT compliant and legal in all 50 states. In fact, the car is currently titled and registered in the state of California with a certificate of conformance, which attests to the over $100,000 we understand was invested to ensure this XJ220 would meet California regulations.

Since being delivered, in fact, the car has only accumulated fewer than 6,900 kilometers and, as such, remains in superb condition throughout. Of particular note are the optional and desirable features and extras that accompany the car, including a custom exhaust system, a leather-trimmed interior with Alcantara seat inserts, power windows, an Alpine audio system, a keyless alarm system with fob, limited-production Michelin Pilot Sport tires, air conditioning, XJ220 floor mats, a toolkit, owner's manuals, and four keys. Finally, the car has been treated to extensive mechanical work within the last 600 miles, namely a new clutch, timing belt, pilot bearings, fuel pumps, fuel filters, turbo and exhaust gaskets, and spark plugs. Additionally, the oil and oil filter were changed, the coolant was flushed, the brake fluid was replaced, and the air conditioning was charged. Of particular expense were the two new turbochargers, brake booster, and new boost controller, all of which were installed in 2005.

The XJ220, over 20 years old and still one of the fastest cars on the planet, catapulted Jaguar into the forefront of the supercar world when it was new, and it still demands respect from enthusiasts today. It continues to embody the best of what the marque has come to symbolize: world-beating performance, stunning coachwork, and distinct British character and sophistication.

Private Party Or Dealer: Dealer

This 1994 Jaguar XJ220 is a left-hand-drive example and one of approximately 280 examples built in total during two years of production. Finished in Spa Silver over Smoke Grey, the car was completed on March 25, 1994 but was not dispatched until July 1997. It was imported to the US on a “show or display” exemption in 2001 and then modified by G&K Auto Conversion to meet EPA and California emissions standards. A twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 powers the rear wheels through a five-speed manual transaxle equipped with a limited-slip differential, and additional factory features include a bonded aluminum chassis, aluminum bodywork, a glass roof, AP Racing brakes, and staggered-diameter Speedline wheels. The selling dealer acquired the car for his collection four years ago, and it has since been mechanically refreshed with an engine rebuild, new clutch, fuel cell service, and more as outlined below. This XJ220 now shows 8k kilometers (~5k miles) and is offered with a tool kit, Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate, clean Carfax report, owner’s manuals, service records, and a California title.

The XJ220 made its first appearance as an all-wheel-drive, V12-powered concept in 1988 before development of a production version began in partnership with Tom Walkinshaw Racing. A rally-derived V6 was chosen in place of the prototype’s larger engine, and the platform was redesigned for rear-wheel drive. The wheelbase and overall length were also shortened, though the prototype’s bonded honeycomb aluminum chassis was carried over. The XJ220 entered production in 1992 after testing in 1991 yielded a top speed of 212.3 mph, a production-car record at the time.

Speedline-designed wheels measure 17” in diameter up front and 18” out back and are secured by hexagonal center-lock nuts. Bridgestone Potenza S007 tires sized 255/45 and 345/55 were sourced from the UK and mounted in 2017. The AP Racing brakes incorporate four-piston aluminum calipers paired with ventilated and cross-drilled rotors measuring 13” and 11.8” in diameter. All four calipers were rebuilt in 2017, with new pads and hoses installed at that time.

The cabin is trimmed in Smoke Grey leather and features pale grey Alcantara on the seat inserts, door panel inserts, and roof pillars. Grey carpeting and matching-color, model-branded floor mats line the footwells, while aluminum sill accents are etched with customer number 247. Amenities include power steering, power windows, electrically adjustable heated mirrors, air conditioning, and an Alpine stereo and CD changer. A new air conditioning compressor was installed in 2017, after which the system was recharged with R12 refrigerant. An area of wear on the driver’s outer bolster is shown up close in the gallery below.

A four-spoke, leather-wrapped steering wheel frames a 220-mph speedometer and 8k-rpm tachometer, as well as gauges monitoring oil pressure, coolant temperature, fuel level, and oil temperature. The cluster surround extends onto the driver’s door, where a quadrant of instruments includes a clock and gauges showing amperage, boost, and transaxle temperature. Both sets of gauges were repaired as needed during the 2017 refresh. The six-digit odometer shows 8k kilometers (~5k miles), 1k of which have been added by the seller.

Also used in the Jaguar XJR-10 and XJR-11 racing cars, the 3.5-liter JV6 engine was developed by Jaguar and TWR based on the Austin Rover V64V from the MG Metro 6R4 Group B rally car. Features include an aluminum block, aluminum cylinder heads, dual overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder, dry-sump lubrication, and twin Garrett turbochargers. Multipoint fuel injection utilizes dual injectors, with engine management handled electronically by Zytek. This engine was disassembled in 2017, with the internal parts cleaned and inspected, the cylinder head surfaces machined, and new valvetrain components installed. The timing belts, ignition components, thermostat, hoses, and gaskets were replaced at that time, while the water pumps were sent to the UK to be rebuilt in 2018. The turbochargers were replaced in 2014, and a GReddy electronic boost controller with cabin adjustment has been added.

Block stamping 10115SB matches the engine number listed on the JHT certificate. The VIN is stamped on the chassis as well as on the A-pillar tag.

The rear wheels are powered via a five-speed manual transaxle with a limited-slip differential. A new clutch disc, pressure plate, clutch slave cylinder, and release and pilot bearings were installed in 2017. The fuel cell was also rebuilt at that time with a new bladder.

The XJ220 features aerodynamic underbody panels to assist with downforce, while the suspension utilizes double wishbones with inboard coil springs, Bilstein gas-filled shock absorbers, and anti-roll bars. The exhaust system was customized during previous ownership.

A dynamometer report from September 2019 shows peak outputs of 520 horsepower and 488 lb-ft of torque. Documents include the Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate, 2001 importation paperwork, and invoices dating back to 2010. A California BAR sticker was issued in November 2001 and is attached to the driver’s door jamb.

The 2017 refresh work was carried out by Evans Automotive Repair in Columbus, Ohio, with parts sourced from Don Law Racing in the UK.

The Carfax report is free of accidents or other damage and includes entries in California and Oregon dating back to 2004. The most recent California emissions inspection is listed in 2014. The seller has not attempted to pass a California smog test, so the car cannot be sold to an in-state private party buyer.
